Why should you consider solar energy?
You might save up to 60% on electricity right away, depending on the size of your home and the type of solar energy system you install. Solar technology increases the value of your home whether you build a new energy-efficient home or upgrade an old one. Solar systems also require extremely little maintenance. Much less than an electric geyser, for example.
You'll save money on your electricity bill, but you'll also have the peace of mind that comes with producing some of your own energy and being less dependent on the national grid.

How does solar energy work?
South Africa also has one of the highest levels of solar radiation in the world. Solar radiation can be utilized to generate heat or electricity, both of which can be used to lower the amount of electricity you consume. When considering solar technology, prioritize reducing your biggest loads first, as this will result in the most savings. You'll save money on your electricity bill, but you'll also have the peace of mind that comes with producing some of your own energy and being less dependent on the national grid.

Is all solar energy the same?
Solar thermal and solar photovoltaic (solar PV) systems are two separate types of solar systems. Solar thermal systems heat water while also saving money because they do not require the use of a geyser, which saves power. Solar photovoltaic is a system that creates power that you can use instead of purchasing it.

Generating your own solar electricity?
Now for making your own electricity: Electricity is generated by silicon cells in solar panels. The electricity created is direct current (DC), while we use alternating current (AC) in our homes. An inverter is used to convert the electricity into AC. All our systems are NRS 097 compliant. In off grid-systems you replace the national power grid with your own grid using a battery inverter and batteries. Solar energy is supplied into the system, with some of it being used immediately and the remainder being stored for later use. Off-grid systems have a large battery storage capacity, typically a two-day supply, for when bad weather reduces solar generation.

What do I need to know about installation and maintenance?
Installation is quite a complicated process. A Power Africa professional installer will advise you on the best alternative energy solution and placement of your solar panels. The more hours your panels are exposed to full sun, the better they will generate power. Solar technology is a big investment, by switching to solar you can reduce your monthly electricity bill by up to 60% from day one and use these savings to pay off your system. The life expectancy of our solar systems is 15–25 years depending upon the system, and the costs of installation can be recovered in as little as three years making solar an exceptional investment.
